Consuming Raw Materials

In Wisefish, consumption means recording which raw materials were used in production and connecting them to the production lot they were used in. Consumption is one half of production. The other half is output, the products made from the raw material.

When a raw material consumption is posted:

  • The raw material trade items are closed, and the quantity is removed from inventory.

  • The consumption is recorded against a production lot and a stage, so the products made in that lot can be traced back to the raw material they came from.

  • The cost of the raw material is assigned to the lot. When the lot is closed, the cost is distributed to the products produced in it (Distribute Contribution).

Before you start

  • A production lot must exist for the consumption. See Creating a Production Lot.

  • The raw material must be available in inventory as open trade items. Trade items on hold can only be consumed if the lot allows it (the Allow Hold Status Postings field on the lot).

  • A default Consumption Stage can be set on the user's WF User Profile. See Production User Configuration.

  • Whether consumption may take standard inventory negative is controlled by Allow Negative Inventory on Consumption in the Wisefish Setup Configuration. See Setup & Configuration.

Correcting consumption

Posted consumption can't be changed directly. To reverse it, use the Trade Item Credit Consumption Journal, which reopens the trade items and returns them to inventory.

Consumption and closing the lot

A production lot with posted consumption can't be closed by just changing its status. Run Distribute Contribution on the lot so the raw material cost is spread over the products. See Closing a Production Lot.
